From 2017-21, I was the lead designer for southern California’s award winning Dionysus Brewing Co.
Over the course of 20+ label designs & apparel projects, we crafted a unique, enduring identity for the brewery. Each design was a collaborative process between the owner & myself, often going back and forth with weirder and weirder ideas until we landed on something exciting.
Project Goal
Create playful, memorable label designs that combine to form a unique brand identity.
My Role
Illustration, Branding, and Art Direction
It all began the way any good project begins - with a quick hand-drawn concept sketch.
From there we decided on the details & dimensions of the die-cut, organized the sidebars, and eventually settled on a final label design prepped for printing.
After a successful first design, we created fresh label artwork for each new beer release over the next 4 years. Dionysus serves a niche in the craft beer world, specializing in sours and ferments that are highly sought after by beer afficionados. For this reason, we wanted each release to have a distinct label identity to enhance the collectibility of the bottle.
As the brewery became more successful and expanded production, I designed a new layout for can labels. I also created designs for commemorative stemware, apparel, and other product lines sold at the brewery.
Conclusion
This was one of my favorite long-term freelance clients. Kyle (owner & brewmaster) bet on me relatively early in my career as a freelance designer, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have worked on so many fun projects together.
